To Engage or Exclude? Managing Human Rights Issues in Global Value Chains (EN)
Human rights risks and negative social impacts are, unfortunately, a reality of international business and investment that drive an ever more integrated global value chains. Investor responses to such risk events are not always simple, as there are a wide range of factors to consider including the type and duration of the investment, the severity of harm, the investor’s ability to engage with the company, reputational risk, social justice, and other factors. How can investors engage their portfolio companies in a principled way, aligned with the expectations of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights? How should investors decide whether to divest or engage when human rights issues arise? This interactive workshop-style session will provide case examples to explore practical approaches to the question of engagement vs. exclusion due to human rights performance.
